These functions are built into the respective iOS and Android systems from Apple and Google, and more and more wearable manufacturers are starting to do the same. Therefore, you can be confident that assistance will be available if you ever need it, whether you rely on the best smartwatch or the best phone when you’re out and about.
Why Would You Want to Set up SOS Location Tracking in An Emergency?
There are a number of situations that could prevent you from speaking on the phone. Knowing how to use SOS emergency capabilities on iPhone, Android, or wearables helps ensure that trustworthy people can reach you right away, whether you have an accident while hiking in a remote area or fall at home.
These features are worth setting up in case you ever need them because they also give you a simple way to contact emergency services directly. The SOS emergency capabilities on the iPhone and other devices, such as the best Android phones and wearable substitutes like the best Garmin watch or Apple Watch, are covered in this guide.
How Does It Function on The Apple Watch and iPhone?
When you take an iPhone out of the box, it already has the SOS emergency features, but there are several settings you can change to make them function more effectively. It functions in every nation, however, in some locations you might only have a limited selection of emergency services.
The process for calling emergency services from an iPhone is straightforward, although it varies depending on the model of the iPhone you have.
Newest iPhones
You can hold down the side button and the volume buttons on an iPhone 8 or later (i.e., a phone released after 2017). The “Emergency SOS” slider will then appear on the screen.
If you drag this across, the emergency services will be contacted right away.
If you are unable to slide this across, keep pressing the buttons until your phone emits an alert sound and a countdown. If you are unable to remove your phone from a pocket, this feature is very helpful because it will end the countdown by dialling 911.
We strongly advise you to create emergency contacts (more on that below), as doing so will quickly message your contacts with information about your location and other important details.

own a vintage iPhone? This will function differently, and you’ll want to press the side button quickly five times. If you’re from India, you’ll only need to press it once or twice. The iPhone’s SOS emergency feature will then show up as a slider, allowing you to place a call right away.
Your emergency contacts will receive a text message with your current location after the call has ended. Although you have the choice to stop this before the messages are delivered, this only functions if you have emergency contacts set up.

How to Add a Contact for Emergencies
Why would you need a contact for emergencies? The first benefit is that it can assist emergency services in determining who to contact, and on Apple devices, this person will immediately receive a message with your location once you phone the emergency services.
Click on the Health app and then tap the profile image to configure this. The option for medical ID is located here, and the option for emergency contacts is located at the bottom of the page.
Here, you can also input the contact’s phone number and details about their relationship. After that, click done to finish creating your emergency contact. These can all be present simultaneously on your iPhone.
What Is the Operation of The Apple Watch?
For those who have the greatest Apple Watch, there is a similar feature where you can press down the side button for a short period of time until the Emergency SOS appears. Unless you have an Apple Watch with LTE, your iPhone must be close by in order to place the call.
If you keep pressing the button, a countdown will start, and when it is over, an emergency services call will go out. Your emergency contacts will then receive a text message from you with your position, just like they would if you were using an iPhone.
How Does It Function on Android Mobile Devices?
Depending on the manufacturer, some features in Android phones vary. By searching for terms like SOS messages or the word emergency in your phone’s settings, you can frequently locate the information you require.
For instance, the Send SOS Messages feature on Samsung phones enables you to contact someone immediately with your position by pressing the side key three times. It will automatically upload images taken with your front and rear cameras as well as a sound file captured just before the message was sent.

SOS for Help
When you press the power button on your phone five times in a row, the Emergency SOS feature on Xiaomi phones will send a message. This won’t include any images or audio recordings, but it will communicate your position and an SOS message. On the Oppo and Realme phones that we tested, the capability was also known as Emergency SOS. Here, you have the option of setting up a message to be sent in place of a phone call to your emergency contacts.
Not all Android phones can send messages to contacts directly, so check the manufacturer’s information on your phone to see if there are any specifics you’re missing. You might also wish to look into alternative apps from third parties. For instance, Hollie Guard(opens in new tab) is a particular programme created so someone may remotely monitor your whereabouts while you’re travelling.
You can even share your precise location at certain times using third-party apps like WhatsApp. This definitely won’t work in some circumstances where you need to be able to reach individuals right away.
How Does It Function on Garmin Wristbands?
Two emergency tracking solutions are available from Garmin, and you can locate them in the Garmin Connect app. When your watch senses a sudden impact or slowdown while you’re engaged in a tracked activity like jogging or cycling, Incident Detection & Assistance sends an emergency message to a selected contact. If you just had a minor accident, you will have a brief window of time to cancel the message before it is sent. The message will include a Google Maps link displaying your location so your emergency contact can find you.
For safety and so they can monitor your progress during a race, LiveTrack enables friends and family to watch your whereabouts in real-time during a GPS-tracked activity.
You must create at least one emergency contact before using either of these capabilities. Select Contacts from the main menu by tapping the button in the upper left corner. Choose to Create Contact by tapping the symbol in the top right. The name, last name, phone number, and email address of the person should be entered. Tap Save when you’re finished.

To create your contact, go back to the main menu, click Safety and Tracking, and then select Incident Detection or LiveTrack. Both options can be activated, and you can use the same emergency contact person or separate ones. You’ll need either an LTE watch like the Garmin Vivoactive 3 or a Bluetooth connection to your phone because all of these capabilities require a cellular connection.
