Apple Watch Pro: News and Expected Price, Release Date, Specs; and More Rumors

It’s no secret that Apple is hard at work on a new Apple Watch Series 8 for release later this year; it’s expected to debut on the same day as the iPhone 14 (September 7) and feature a number of essential improvements over prior models. It has also been rumored that a new Apple Watch Pro is in the works.

The rumored Watch model appears to be getting a more durable construction, complete with high-end materials and additional sensors geared at enticing athletes and extreme sports enthusiasts to make the jump.

If that seems like something you’d like to have on your wrist, then keep reading: here’s all we know about the impending Apple Watch Pro.’

Apple Watch Name: Go for Pro?

To begin with, it is unclear at this time if Apple’s next smartwatch will actually be called the Watch Pro. That would be consistent with Apple’s other product names, like MacBook, iPad, and iPhone. No one knows for sure, but it seems that even AirPods have a Pro version.

Watch Pro was initially proposed by Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman, who also recommended Apple Watch Extreme, Apple Watch Max, and Apple Watch Explorer Edition.

We’re going to continue using Apple Watch Pro until we hear otherwise (if somebody wants to leak a retail box or official art assets, let us know).

What We Know About the Apple Watch’s Design and Functionality so Far

At the company’s developer conference earlier this year, WWDC, Apple made it clear that health and fitness would be a priority with watchOS 9. To prepare for the upcoming Apple Watch 8 (and by extension, the Apple Watch Pro), Apple has developed new software that will allow triathletes to easily switch between running, swimming, and cycling modes. It also records sophisticated data like a runner’s stride length, ground contact time, and vertical oscillation, which are all in keeping with a more extreme watch.

Right now, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has contacts at Apple, is the only source of information thanks to an article he wrote for his Power On newsletter. A second article elaborated on his initial hints that a ruggedized version of the Watch Series 8 would be released, adding that it would feature a bigger screen, longer battery life, and different case materials.

Screen size could expand to 2 inches diagonally, from 1.9 inches on the Watch Series 7, and resolution could be increased to 502 by 410 pixels, as mentioned by Gurman. The metal case should be more robust than the aluminum used in the existing Apple Watch models, and the glass coating should be resistant to breaking. The current frontrunner is a stronger titanium alloy.

It was widely anticipated that the 2022 Apple Watch would get an updated design. Supply chain sources have suggested flat glass is being prepared for manufacture, replacing the elevated, curved panels present on current Apple Watch models, suggesting Apple may go for a flatter appearance inspired by the iPhone 13 and new 2022 MacBook Air.

It’s unclear if the underlying case will evolve to reflect this, although recent developments suggest that this is unlikely to happen. As Mark Gurman put it, the next model will be “an development of the present rectangular shape,” and it “also won’t have those supposed flat edges.”

An internal skin temperature sensor is also likely to make the cut, which will aid Apple Health in identifying fevers and diseases. Various people, including the always insightful Mark Gurman, have spread this rumor. Furthermore, the sale is all but done thanks to an Apple patent that details a temperature sensor for a wristwatch. The only question is if it will be included in the Series 8 devices, like the Watch Pro, or if it will be saved for a later version, like the Series 9. There’s no need to get your hopes up about home blood pressure or glucose monitoring anytime soon. These technologies are still years away from being made available to the general public.

Apple Watch Pro Release Date Window

New generations of Apple’s Watch have historically been released with each new iPhone, so we anticipate its release on September 7 alongside the iPhone 14. All Series 8 variants are expected to be announced at the same time, therefore a separate event is unnecessary.

Here are the dates from previous years:

Series 1 and Series 2 release date: September 16, 2016
Series 3 release date: September 22, 2017
Series 4 release date: September 21, 2018
Series 5 release date: September 20, 2019
Series 6 and SE release date: September 18, 2020
Series 7 release date: October 15, 2021 (announced September 14, 2021)

Apple products typically go on sale a week after their first appearance in the media, but given the current problems with the global tech supply chain, there’s a good chance the new model won’t begin delivering until October.

Apple Watch Pro Likely Price

We can only speculate on the pricing because an extreme Apple Watch is an unknown area, although one analyst has anticipated a starting price of $899 to $999 (£750-£850).

The price would be significantly higher than the existing Apple Watch 7, according to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, because of the larger display, new sensors, and higher-end materials. The top-end variant of that model can cost as much as £1449, with a starting price of £369.

If true, that would place Apple’s sportiest product ahead of reputable competitors like Garmin, which frequently appears on our list of the best GPS sports watches.
