American author Steven Pressfield (born September 1943) writes historical fiction and nonfiction as well as screenplays.
While his father served in the Navy, the family moved frequently, and in 1943 he was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad. After completing his degree at Duke in 1965, he enlisted in the Marine Corps the following year. In the years that followed, he tried his hand at advertising copywriting, teaching, tractor-trailer driving, bartending, oilfield roustabouting, mental hospital assisting, Washington state fruit picking, and screenwriting. The War of Art includes a chapter in which he lives in the trunk of his car after being evicted from his apartment. The cinematic adaptation of his first novel, The Legend of Bagger Vance, starring Will Smith, Charlize Theron, and Matt Damon and directed by Robert Redford, was released in 1995.
