The author’s birth year is 1947 and he was born in Portland, Maine. King’s mother, Nellie Ruth, raised him and his adopted brother David on her own after his father abandoned the family when he was young. Prior to landing in Durham, Maine, the family made stops in Wisconsin, Indiana, and Connecticut. King was a child when a buddy of his was murdered by a train when they were walking together.

After leaving the house to play with the youngster, King reportedly returned, unable to articulate his feelings or explain what had happened. The family learned the tragic news of the boy’s passing later that day. When Stephen was eleven, his mother began working as a caretaker in a hospital for the mentally ill.

King got his master’s degree and then taught high school and sold short tales to men’s magazines. At Hampden Academy in Maine, he began teaching in 1971. Doubleday bought King’s “Carrie” in 1973. King’s first published work, though his fourth overall. In addition to launching King’s career, “Carrie” also made a big impact as a horror story. The 1976 horror film adaptation starring Sissy Spacek was a commercial and critical success.
