Tim Curry Illness: Nine Years After His Stroke, He Is Still in A Wheelchair

British actor, singer, and composer Tim Curry is worth an estimated $14 million. Tim Curry, who was born in Grappenhall, Warrington, England, in 1946, is an actor who is best known for playing Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the film adaptation of “The Rocky Horror Show” in 1975. He also played the part in the London and Los Angeles stage productions of the show in the ’70s. The part of Dr. Frank-N-Furter was created for Curry after he performed in the first London version of the musical “Hair” in 1968.

As Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, he made his Broadway debut in the original cast of “Amadeus,” and he has since been in such productions as “The Pirates of Penzance,” “The Threepenny Opera,” and “Spamalot,” among many others. With his performance in Spamalot, Curry took home the Tony. Among the many films he has been in include Annie, Legend, Clue, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, Muppet Treasure Island, The Hunt for Red October, The Three Musketeers, The Shadow, Congo, and Charlie’s Angels. As of late, Curry has focused primarily on voice acting for animated features. Tim Curry had a devastating stroke in his Los Angeles home in May of 2013.

Tim Curry Early Life

James Timothy Curry, son of school secretary Patricia (who passed away in June 1999) and Royal Navy chaplain Timothy Curry, was born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall. Curry was only 12 when his father passed away in 1958 from illness. Judith, his older sister, was a concert pianist who tragically passed away in 2001 from a brain tumor.

A large portion of Curry’s formative years were spent in the city of Plymouth. His father had passed away, so the family relocated to South London, where he attended a boarding school before moving on to Kingswood School in Bath, Somerset. He grew up to be a gifted boy soprano (treble). His passion for acting led him to earn a BA in English and theater from the University of Birmingham in 1968.

Tim Curry Personal Life

In 1988, Curry made his way to the City of Angels. Since suffering a massive stroke in July 2012, Curry has been confined to a wheelchair. As a result, his career has changed toward voice acting, while he still occasionally performs as a singer and attends conventions for his fans.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show was read aloud at a dinner for the Democratic Party of Wisconsin in October 2020 with Tim Curry reprising his part as Dr. Frank-N-Furter to benefit Joe Biden’s presidential candidacy.

Tim Curry’s Health: Nine Years After a Stroke, He Uses a Wheelchair

Tim Curry’s performance as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the many Rocky Horror Picture Show productions ensured his status as a movie and theater star. The British actor stumbled into the part and made the most of it. In a career spanning four decades, he never again achieved the level of fame achieved by his breakthrough performance.

He avoided Rocky Horror like the plague out of fear of being typecast, but he couldn’t escape his unforgettable turns in the show. He had a stroke in 2012, and it made him appreciate Dr. Frank-N-Furter even more. Tim told ABC News, “It’s neither a benefit nor a curse.” To paraphrase, “I got lucky.”

Tim Curry Still Uses a Wheelchair Nine Years After Suffering a Major Stroke

In early 2011, Tim Curry began to experience health issues, which led him to withdraw from a few theater plays. It took almost a year for word of Curry’s health problem to spread after he had a stroke in July of 2012.

His representative, Marcia Hurwitz, revealed to The Hollywood Reporter, “Tim had a stroke last July.” He’s making fantastic progress in physical therapy and has maintained his irrepressible sense of humor. He appreciates everyone’s kind wishes. A full recovery from the stroke was anticipated for Curry. During the 2015 Tony Awards, he told Los Angeles Magazine, “I’m doing fine.” Tim said that keeping his sense of humor was “extremely crucial” to his healing. It’s not hard to keep up,” he assured me. I was born with it, so to speak.

At a Manchester convention called For The Love of Horror 4 that took place in October 2021, Tim was able to interact with his devoted following. From the pictures we have of the occasion, it is clear that Tim is still dependent on his wheelchair for mobility. Curry still shows signs of illness, but he hasn’t given up his positive outlook on life. One of Tim’s favorite sayings, as featured on Tim Curry News, shows that he tries to see the bright side of things:

I do my best to see the good side of things because if you’re always complaining about how bad everything is, you’re not much fun to be around. That’s something every one of us should be responsible for.

Curry Has Limited His Public Appearances After Suffering a Stroke

After suffering a stroke, Tim Curry increasingly diminished his public appearances. He also began to focus on singing and voice acting. Having won a lifetime achievement Tony Award, he went to the ceremony in 2015. The group, he told Los Angeles Magazine, had recognized him for his great career. What it means is that it further reinforces the type of job that the American acting community has offered me for years. What a kind gesture on their part. When they told me, I was ecstatic, and I am still ecstatic now.

After waiting another five years, Tim finally attended a fundraiser for the Wisconsin Democratic Party. He was there with the rest of the cast of The Rocky Horror Show to perform the original script. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were not yet elected to office in the United States when the fundraiser took place. Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Ben Wikler made the following statement:

This Halloween Night reunion is going to energize Wisconsin Democrats in the home stretch, and that’s saying something because Rocky Horror has been transforming lives for decades. “This famous musical will motivate new volunteers and raise donations to deliver Joe Biden and Kamala Harris to the White House with its joy, laughing, and funny, outrageous energy.”
