Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, a left-wing challenger, and former president defeated incumbent President Jair Bolsonaro in a heated presidential election runoff in Brazil. On Monday, October 31, though, Bolsonaro was still defiant. The inauguration of Lula is slated for January 1, 2023.

Lula received 48.4% of the votes in the first election, while Bolsonaro obtained 43.2%. No party received more than 50% of the vote, hence a runoff vote was arranged on October 30. Lula garnered 50.9% of the vote in the runoff election, while Bolsonaro obtained 49.1%. Bolsonaro is the first Brazilian president in office to lose his bid for reelection.
